General Information about the UBS
The Ukrainian Bible Society (UBS) is an interdenominational Christian organization whose goal is the translation, printing, and distribution of the Bible and biblical liturgical literature. The Society comprises twenty-one leading Ukrainian churches of Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant confessions that recognize the Bible as the Word of God, as well as the Department of Religious Studies of the H. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The UBS was founded on June 22, 1991, and is a member of the global fellowship of United Bible Societies, which includes 150 national societies covering over 200 countries and territories worldwide.
Following the conviction that the Bible is the foundation of a prosperous and harmonious society, the Society considers its main task to be ensuring access to God’s Word for every person—regardless of social status, linguistic or ethnic characteristics, religious affiliation, age, or place of residence—in the most accessible, convenient, and understandable form.
Over its years of activity, the Society has printed and distributed over 13 million copies of biblical editions in various languages and formats, of which over 4 million were distributed within the framework of all-Ukrainian charitable projects. The Society considers it an honorary duty to distribute the Bible among people with special physical, spiritual, or social needs by preparing special editions and distributing them free of charge in a number of social, medical, and correctional institutions. Since 2014, the Bible Society has been printing and distributing special biblical editions among the Armed Forces of Ukraine and displaced persons.
Responding to the societal need for a Bible translation into modern Ukrainian, in 2011, the UBS presented the Fourth Complete Ukrainian Translation of the Bible from Ancient Greek (the Septuagint/UTT).
In 2020, the first edition of the Modern Translation of the Bible into Ukrainian from the ancient Hebrew original (CUV) was released, marking the culmination of many years of work by the Society and dozens of domestic and foreign specialists. It received the approval of all confessions that are members of the UBS.
In the autumn of 2023, the second edition of the Ukrainian Bible Society’s Modern Translation of the Bible was presented in two variations: with and without the deuterocanonical books. Work on the electronic version of the text is currently underway.
